An active phase of the Donbass war cannot be resumed, while halting or prolonging the conflict along the «line of contact», using trench warfare style as seen at the beginning of the century, is no longer possible. Six long years of military actions in the east of the country vitalised the potential of the powers, capable of taking integration and restoration of Donbass off the agenda, also making functioning of the unrecognised republics in the autonomous status impossible.
Over the period of the destructive war a long list of new ecological threats has emerged. Part of the launched negative anthropogenic processes are irreversible, both for nature and economy of the once most industrialised and urbanised regions of Ukraine. Donbass faces the threat of vitality loss in the short-term period of 5-10 years. The new external enemy is being shaped, identification and acute relevancy of which are absent from the public language of the parties to the conflict. Meanwhile, the consequences of the possible realization of scientific estimates will be shared, and their cost is rising with every month of inaction.
